The state government in Brandenburg wants to cancel the improvement in staffing ratios for the crèche sector as one of several cost-cutting measures. According to the accompanying budget bill, the law passed last summer in the last legislature (Article 3 of the Third Act to Improve Quality and Participation) is to be cancelled. The reason given for this is the ongoing shortage of skilled labour in the crèche sector. The improved staffing levels in crèches were originally due to come into force on 1 August 2025. „Now the planned improvement in quality and stability in childcare will not be able to materialise,“ says lawyer Franziska Wilke. The bill is to be introduced to the state parliament on 10 April 2025 as part of a special session at first reading. It will also be discussed in a special session of the Committee on Budget and Finance on the same day. „The further development of the bill will then become clear,“ says Wilke.
