Mayors in office face legal hurdles when it comes to financing their election campaigns. While their opposing candidates are allowed to accept donations without major restrictions, election officials are subject to strict anti-corruption regulations in accordance with Sections 331 and 332 of the German Criminal Code (StGB). These provisions criminalise the acceptance of benefits and bribery, making it difficult to finance election campaigns in a legally secure manner.
