On 6 June 2024, the German Bundestag passed an amendment to the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG). The aim is to further accelerate the expansion of wind energy. For the first time, the climate will be included as a protected good in the BImSchG. In addition, numerous streamlining measures are planned in the authorisation procedure. In future, approval periods may only be extended once by three months. Project developers will be allowed to submit documents later if they are not directly relevant to the authorisation process. The procedure for the early start of construction is also to be simplified. In the case of wind turbines and electrolysers for hydrogen from renewable energies, a hearing is to be dispensed with. The repowering of wind turbines is also to be made considerably easier through various adjustments. However, the Federal Council still has to approve the proposed legislation.
