In future, candidates running for the Bundestag will no longer have to give their exact home address. This is provided for in an ordinance amending the Federal Election Code. The aim is to better protect candidates from possible attacks. If a candidate can prove to the district electoral officer that an information block has been entered for him or her in the population register, he or she can only provide an address where he or she can be contacted instead of the place of residence. However, a PO box is not sufficient. In future, candidates for a seat in the Bundestag will no longer have to disclose their date of birth, but only their year of birth. In addition, the planned amendment to the Federal Registration Act is intended to better protect vulnerable people such as local politicians, volunteers or journalists by making it more difficult to query data in registration registers. Anyone who is threatened by their professional activity or commitment can have their information blocked. This is now to be increased from two to four years.
